A tree preservation order (TPO) application requires supporting technical information from an arboriculturist if the application is based on the condition of the tree or suspected damage caused by the tree.

Work to trees in conservation areas requires six weeks' notice, in which time the local planning authority may take the opportunity to make a TPO on the tree to protect its amenity.
